South Fork of the Kings River

Old juniper, old artificer, blue berries,
gin and July, you’ve done this walk
once, twice, or a thousand times, now
walk out of the valley, on the granite
out of yourself, not one apart
from granite and gruss,
from the sound and flow,
stop at the tall pine, jeffreyi,
smell of the bark vanilla,
think about pie crusts, what else?
Cookies my mom used to make,
blue blazes, sunlight downstream,
stanzas of delphinium, towering
larkspur, little dolphins
leaping from the stem.
