Happy Mistakes

Pinhole Photography by Art One Students
Rachel Somerville, Teacher

Tomales High School

Students often struggle with a concern for perfection and a preconception that “good art” should be a precise rendition of real life. For a lesson in accepting the power of chance and happenstance in creative work, Art One students at Tomales High School received pinhole Holga cameras and were assigned to photograph the landscapes in which they live.

The pinhole camera is unpredictable because of its simplicity. There are no viewfinders, digital screens, or zoom lenses. The shutter, a flap of some light-proof material, is usually manually operated, covering and uncovering a pinhole cut into one side of a light-proof box. The smaller the hole, the sharper the image. Though the photographer has little control, resulting images are full of unexpected, beautiful mistakes.
