As if out walking I’m reading the book you sent.
I follow where the pages go
then start to wander.
A ruby-throated hummingbird big as my thumb
veers in to feed at the gorgeous cover.
He hangs there whirring. Then it’s me
hovering over sentences bound in gloss, aware
you found these marks on this side this far down.
Deep into the book about walking I’m where you were
my hand your hand. Springing the spine
holds me like a girl at a window, breathing
as if your fragrance were here
where a paragraph yields
another country, somewhere else.
